The project description

Sky Park and Jurkovičova tepláreň kicked off massive construction processes and set a new bar for expectations from architecture and public spaces in downtown Bratislava. The transformations also affected the former construction assembly hall, once known as the Design Factory cultural space. Despite its modest size, it had an exceptional location – at the intersection of strategic pedestrian routes between the embankment, Nové Nivy station, the historic center, and the expanding Mlynské Nivy zone.

ZSE chose this location for its future headquarters, including administrative offices, a customer center, and event spaces. In accordance with environmental principles, the design preserved the hall and its authentic reinforced concrete elements in order to integrate the entrance lobby, front office, and cultural hall with a café into its interior. The original structure is topped by a 14-story administrative superstructure that surrounds the hall with a covered arcade.

The purist architecture of the superstructure contrasts with the organic shapes of Sky Park and adds an aesthetic counterpoint to its lush forms – the calming rectangular rhythm of the steel skeleton. This is connected to the hall by columns, while diagonal loggias disrupt the regular grid of the façade. The terraces on the roof of the hall and the top floor develop the idea of a vertical garden. Trees in the architecture complement the green arsenal of public spaces designed as a pixelated exterior carpet.
